Digital and Social Media Adaptation

This project functions as an adaptation in the form of a response of sorts. Ode to an Orange highlights the emotional journey and nostalgia associated with eating an orange, especially as it relates to his family experiencing it together. It very nearly thanks the humble orange for providing such positive memories (as well as immune support). While reading this ode, I was taken on a journey that reminded me of my own experiences with oranges: my dad pulling over in California to pick up oranges that had fallen from trees, every Christmas morning finding an orange in the toe of my stocking. It got me to thinking: what kind of an ode would oranges write to us? Now, obviously it would likely be more of a plea for their lives; I chose to take some creative liberties, imagining that the beautiful orange enjoys being an emotional and physical support to us. Thus, my adaptation of this ode was born. The texts being used are greatly varied from one another, not only by time and subject m...

On Reading and Creating Social Media

Reading Social Media Beginning in the 1990's, the ability to interact with friends and strangers alike over the internet initially constituted simple chat rooms; however, social media today has become as unique and diverse as the people who utilize it. Social media is no longer simply read, but experienced in a multi-media presentation across every platform one could possibly imagine. Social media can be defined as any platform online which can be used to connect with people, products, and places remotely. While some formats rely on text only, others mainly feature images, and still others support varying lengths of videos. Within each platform is a 'culture' of sorts, rules of engagement that define the structure and rules of engagement. Social media is also facilitated as a community, requiring participants to agree to certain guidelines as well as providing support when it is believed these guidelines are being neglected. The following questions will help readers (and p...

Something Hopeful Photograph

Reminders In times such as these, it is easy to forgot the impact I might have on those around me. I am constantly being gaslit by my own mind, being told "People don't need you", "People are annoyed by you", "Who are you to think you have anything to teach other people". In those moments, I pull out the reminders. Letters, notes, cards, things slipped across the table during school and things mailed from halfway across the world. Some are from friends, reminding me of a time I was able to lift them up. Some are from dance students and gymnasts, thanking me through shaky handwriting and flattering drawn images. I treasure each word, because they remind me that I am more than my challenges.   I created this image as I read through the letters this evening, piling them one on top of the other. These reminders are the definition of hope: something to cling to as I move forward in uncertain times. The image looks a little chaotic, just as hope often does...
