Remix Assignment Remixed

 The Assignment:

(Changes highlighted)

Each student will choose an existing, media representation of the culture, race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, etc. with which he/she identifies.

Medium Constraint: The representation may be in any medium (film, photograph, visual art, poetry, literature, advertisement, news article, song, music video, etc.) but the specific media artifact they reference should be no more than 2 years old. 5 points

Creative Constraint: Students will then remix the representation present in the media artifact. The medium should change from the original to your creation; lyrics - not lyrics, video - not video, photograph - not photograph, etc. 15 points

Contextual Constraint: The remixed representation you create must demonstrate your own negotiation of identity as described above.  Your remix should also be a commentary on how that identity has been recently represented in media. 20 points

Reflection Constraint: Response to the Project: Artist/Teacher statements should answer the following questions:

-How is your understanding of the media text influenced by your background?

-What view of the world and what values does the media text present?

Use as many words as you feel are necessary to fully answer the question.

include a discussion of the correlations and contradictions between your remix (perspectives, practices, etc.) and the recent representation of this aspect of your identity. You should also describe how this project and Barney's "Responding" essay helped you consider new ways to aid students as they discover ideas and jump into ongoing conversations about the formation of identities (culture, race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion). 10 points.
